The ruins of Dur-Sharrukin were discovered in the 19th century by French archaeologist Paul-Émile Botta. The city was founded by the Assyrian king Sargon II in 722 BC and was the capital of the Assyrian Empire until it was destroyed by the Babylonians in 612 BC. The ruins of the city are located near the modern town of Khorsabad in northern Iraq.
