Dur-Sharrukin was a new capital constructed by Sargon II, king of Assyria, in the late eighth century BCE. It was located in what is now northern Iraq, and was intended to be a more secure and impressive capital than Ashur, the previous capital. Dur-Sharrukin was a large city, with a population of over 100,000 people.
