Sargon II was a king of Assyria who ruled from 721 to 705 BC. He was the son of Sennacherib and the brother of Esarhaddon. Sargon II overthrew his uncle Shalmaneser V to become king. Sargon II was a successful military leader and he expanded the Assyrian Empire to its greatest extent. He also built the city of Dur-Sharrukin, which was his capital.
