Sayyid Qutb was executed in 1966 for plotting the assassination of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Qutb was a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization that opposed Nasser's secularist policies. Qutb was arrested in 1965 and charged with treason. He was convicted and executed by hanging in 1966.
