Schuyler Colfax was the 39th Speaker of the House of Representatives, serving in that position from 1863 to 1869. He was a member of the Republican Party and had previously served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Indiana from 1855 to 1869. Colfax was a staunch supporter of President Abraham Lincoln and the Union cause during the American Civil War.
