Henry Wilson replaced Schuyler Colfax as vice president in 1873. Wilson was a senator from Massachusetts and had been a supporter of Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. He was a strong advocate for civil rights and helped to pass the 1875 Civil Rights Act.
