During the Mercury Atlas 6 mission, Scott Carpenter served as the backup astronaut to John Glenn, who successfully completed the historic first orbital flight around the Earth by an American astronaut on February 20, 1962. Carpenter would later have his moment in the spotlight with his own successful Mercury mission, Mercury-Atlas 7, where he became the fourth American to orbit the Earth.
