Vauban was a French military engineer who served under Louis XIV. He was responsible for the design and construction of many fortifications, including the Citadel of Lille and the Fortress of Neuf-Brisach. He was also a prolific writer on military subjects, and his writings had a significant influence on the development of military engineering. In 1675, he was elevated to the nobility and given the title of Marquis de Vauban.
