Julia Domna was Septimius Severus's second wife. She was a Syrian princess and the daughter of the Roman client king of Emesa, Sextus Varius Marcellus. She married Severus in 187 and bore him two sons, Caracalla and Geta. She was a powerful figure in the Roman Empire and was instrumental in the rise of her son Caracalla to power. She was assassinated by Caracalla in 217.
