Answer
Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus were Septimius Severus's main rival generals. Pescennius Niger was the governor of Syria, while Albinus was the governor of Britain. Both men were ambitious and wanted to become emperor. In 193, Niger declared himself emperor and marched on Rome. Albinus supported Severus, who was then governor of Pannonia. Severus defeated Niger and became emperor. Albinus then declared himself emperor in 196.
