The Serbian SuperLiga was formerly part of the Yugoslav First League, the top-tier football league of Yugoslavia. After the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992, the league was reorganized into separate national leagues for each of the former Yugoslav republics. The Serbian SuperLiga became the top-tier league in Serbia and Montenegro, and remained so after Montenegro gained independence in 2006.
