Vladislav Ardzinba served as the President of Abkhazia before Sergei Bagapsh. Ardzinba was a prominent figure in the Abkhaz national movement and led the breakaway republic during the 1992-1993 war with Georgia. He was elected as the first President of Abkhazia in 1994 and served until 2005, when he was succeeded by Bagapsh.
