Bubka is Ukrainian, born in Luhansk, then part of the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. He won Olympic gold for the Unified Team in 1992, then competed for Ukraine. Bubka was the first man to clear six metres, which he did in July 1985 in Paris, France. He held the official world record for pole vault for almost 21 years, both indoors and outdoors.
