Sergei Korolev was a Soviet rocket scientist who oversaw the Soviet space program. He was responsible for the development of the Soviet Union's first human spaceflight, Vostok 1, which was launched on 12 April 1961 with Yuri Gagarin aboard. Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth, and the mission was a major success for the Soviet Union.
