José Mourinho succeeded Fernando Santos as Porto manager in 2002. Santos had led Porto to the UEFA Cup and Portuguese Cup the previous season, but he left to coach the Greek national team. Mourinho, who had previously been an assistant coach at Barcelona and Porto, took over and guided Porto to an unprecedented treble of the Portuguese league, cup, and UEFA Cup in his first season.
