Shane Long made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland in 2007, at the age of 22. He came on as a substitute in the 68th minute of a friendly match against Slovakia, which ended in a 1–1 draw. He made his first start for the team a few months later, in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Georgia.
