At age 19, Yau moved to the United States to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from MIT in 1965, followed by a Ph.D. in mathematics from Princeton University in 1968. After completing his doctorate, Yau joined the faculty of Harvard University, where he remains to this day.
