Shirley Ann Jackson was the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She earned a PhD in physics in 1973, and went on to become a distinguished physicist and science policymaker. Jackson has held several high-level positions in the US government, including as chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and as President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
