Shirley Williams held the distinguished title of Professor Emerita of Electoral Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School. She was a member of the British Labour Party and served as a member of Parliament from 1964 to 1983. She was also a cabinet minister in the governments of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan.
