James Callaghan succeeded Harold Wilson as Prime Minister in 1976. He was a Labour Party member and had previously served as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was Prime Minister during a period of economic crisis and high unemployment. He was forced to devalue the pound and introduce unpopular spending cuts. He was defeated in the 1979 general election and Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister.
