Siad Barre was a Somali military officer and politician who served as the second President of Somalia from 1969 to 1991. After the assassination of President Abdirashid Shermarke, Siad Barre assumed the role of President. He was initially a popular leader, but his authoritarian rule and support of clan-based politics eventually led to the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in 1991.
