After the death of Sigismund I, his son, Sigismund II Augustus, succeeded him as king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania. Sigismund II Augustus was a very successful ruler who oversaw the expansion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the establishment of Warsaw as the capital of the country. He also promoted the arts and sciences, and is credited with founding the University of Vilnius.
