Sigismund II Augustus was born on 1 August 1520. He was the last of the Jagiellonian dynasty, ruling the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1548 to 1572. During his reign, he strengthened the Commonwealth's position in Europe and oversaw the Union of Lublin, which merged the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania into a single state.
