Sigismund was the son of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. After Charles' death in 1378, Sigismund inherited the Kingdom of Bohemia and several other territories held by his father. Sigismund also later became King of Hungary in 1387 and was elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1410, continuing the Luxembourg dynasty's rule over these realms.
