The Winter War, between Finland and the Soviet Union, began on November 30, 1939, and lasted until March 13, 1940. The conflict mainly took place on the Karelian Isthmus, part of Finland's southeastern border, and in the northern regions of the country. Despite the significant military power of the Soviet Union, the Finnish forces managed to hold their ground and inflicted heavy casualties on the Soviet troops.
