Italian physicist Carlo Rubbia was born in Gorizia, Italy, in 1934. He is best known for his work on the weak nuclear force, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1984. Rubbia's research has also had important implications for the development of particle accelerators and the search for new particles. He is currently a professor at the University of Pavia in Italy.
