Magda Davitt was the name adopted by Savita Halappanavar, an Indian dentist living in Ireland, who died of sepsis after being refused an abortion despite being miscarrying. She was 17 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to hospital on 21 October 2012 with pain and bleeding. She was found to be miscarrying and her cervix was 6cm dilated, but she was refused an abortion as the foetus had a heartbeat.
