Sirimavo Bandaranaike was born into a Sinhalese Kandyan aristocratic family. Her father, Don Stephen Senanayake, was a prominent figure in the struggle for independence from British rule. He served as the first Prime Minister of Ceylon from 1947 to 1952. Sirimavo was the first woman to be elected as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1960.
