Sirimavo Bandaranaike failed to win the Office of President before her restoration of her party's relevance. She was the first woman to be elected as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1960, but was defeated in the 1965 presidential election. She returned to power as Prime Minister in 1970 and remained in office until 1977.
