Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka at the time, survived an attempted coup d'état in 1962. The coup was led by the leader of the opposition party, Dudley Senanayake, and was supported by some members of the military. However, the coup was unsuccessful and Sirimavo Bandaranaike remained in power.
