Sister Nivedita was a teacher before she became a social activist. She taught at a girls' school in Calcutta, India, and was also a writer and lecturer. In 1893, she met Swami Vivekananda, a Hindu monk and philosopher, and became his disciple. She then devoted her life to spreading his teachings and working for the welfare of women and children in India.
