The Boxer Rebellion of 1899–1901, also known as the Yihetuan Movement, was a violent anti-foreign, anti-Christian uprising in China against foreign influence in the late Qing dynasty. Smedley Butler participated in the multinational military effort to relieve the foreign legations besieged in Beijing as a young Marine Corps officer, seeing his first active combat during this conflict.
