Sokolović, the Christian family to which Mehmed Pasha belonged, originated from the region of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. Originally Serbian Orthodox, the family converted to Islam when Mehmed's father was taken as a child by the Ottoman Turks and rose through the ranks of the Ottoman military and administration.
