Sooyoung began her singing career in 2002 as a member of Korean-Japanese duo Route 0, alongside Japanese idol Yui Ichikawa. The duo released two singles, both of which failed to chart. In 2007, Sooyoung joined girl group Girls' Generation, which has since become one of the most successful girl groups in South Korean history.
