In 1692, George Louis, Elector of Hanover, became heir presumptive to the British throne upon the death of his father, Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover. George Louis was the grandson of Sophia, Electress of Hanover, who was the granddaughter of James I of England. As such, George Louis was the closest Protestant relative to the childless King William III of England.
