Sophia was the daughter of Frederick V of the Palatinate. Frederick V was a German nobleman who was elected King of Bohemia in 1619. However, he was deposed by the Habsburgs in 1620 and fled to the Netherlands. Sophia was born in 1630 in The Hague. She married Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1658. They had 15 children, including George I of Great Britain.
