Hirayama played professionally for 17 years, from 1989 to 2006. He began his career with the Hanshin Tigers, and he also played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, the Chiba Lotte Marines, and the Orix BlueWave. He was a two-time Japanese Baseball MVP, and he was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
