Answer

Statesville was established in the 18th century. It was originally called "Dixon's Crossroads" because it was located at the intersection of two roads. In 1797, the town was renamed "Statesville" in honor of Richard Dobbs Spaight, who was then the governor of North Carolina. The town was incorporated in 1818.
