After the anti-German coup of 23 August 1944, Ion Antonescu was removed from power. As a result, the new prime minister, General Constantin Sănătescu, ordered Foriș's arrest and the Romanian National Committee of the Iron Guard was disbanded. He was kidnapped and bludgeoned to death on 25 August.
