Stendhal was a 19th century French novelist, critic and travel writer. He was one of the first writers to write psychological novels, and his work has been influential on many later writers, including Marcel Proust and James Joyce. Stendhal had no children. He was married twice, but both marriages ended in divorce. He died in 1842 at the age of 51.
