Stepan Bandera was an Ukrainian nationalist and anti-communist revolutionary who was assassinated in Munich, Germany, in 1959 by a KGB agent. He had been a leading figure in the Ukrainian independence movement during World War II and had been imprisoned by the Soviet Union after the war. He was released from prison in 1956 and went to Munich, where he continued his political activities.
