Stepan Bandera was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1934 for his involvement in the assassination of the Polish Minister of the Interior, Bronisław Pieracki. The assassination was carried out by Ukrainian nationalists in retaliation for the Polish government's repression of Ukrainians in Poland. Bandera was released from prison in 1939, after the outbreak of World War II.
