Pope Gregory VII was a Roman Catholic pope who reigned from 1073 to 1085. He is best known for his role in the Investiture Controversy, in which he asserted the primacy of the papacy over the Holy Roman Empire. Gregory VII also canonized Stephen I, the first king of Hungary, in 1083.
