Pepin the Short, King of the Franks, came to the aid of Pope Stephen II, who was under threat from the Lombards, a Germanic people who had invaded and occupied much of Italy in the 6th century. Pepin defeated the Lombards in 756 and donated the lands he conquered to the papacy, creating the Papal States and securing the pope's temporal power in central Italy.
