Answer
Godfrey the Bearded was a German nobleman and Duke of Lower Lorraine. In 1054, Pope Stephen IX offered Godfrey the Imperial crown in order to secure the support of the German princes in his conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor Henry III. Godfrey declined the offer, and the crown was eventually awarded to Henry III's brother, Conrad.
