Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science. He is best known for his contributions to Theory of punctuated equilibrium, which proposes that the tempo of evolution is not a constant process, but is punctuated by periods of rapid change. He was also a vocal critic of scientific creationism and intelligent design.
