The Ottawa Senators drafted Steve Martins out of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the first round, 12th overall, of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 1991–92 season, recording seven goals, 20 assists, and 27 points in 75 games. Martins remained with the Senators until the 1994–95 season when he was traded to the New York Islanders.
