Jim Ryun, Frank Shorter, and Bill Rodgers were some of Prefontaine's contemporary runners. Ryun was the first high schooler to break four minutes in the mile, and he went on to win the 1500 meters at the 1968 Olympics. Shorter won the 5000 meters at the 1972 Olympics, and he also won the Boston Marathon three times.
