Steve Hamas retired from boxing in 1935 after a successful career that included two world middleweight championships. He won the first title in 1928 by defeating Johnny Risko, and then defended it against the likes of Tommy Loughran and Jack Sharkey. Hamas lost the title to Sharkey in 1930, but regained it in 1931 by defeating him in a rematch.
