Thomas Jonathan Jackson graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1846, ranking 17th in his class of 59 cadets. He was assigned to the 1st U.S. Artillery as a second lieutenant and served in the Mexican-American War. After the war, he taught at the Virginia Military Institute and then served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
